MEMBERS of parliament urged the ministry of tourism to ensure that tourists were not abusing Swazi girls.
They referred to the recent case, where Kenny Kunene known as ‘Sushi King’ was in the country and boasted of having shared a bed with Swazi girls.
Debating the ministry of tourism’s first quarter report, Zombodze Emuva MP Johannes Ndlangamandla said it was the responsibility of the ministry to educate tourists not to do this. “Tourists must be taught about behaviour that is expected of them whilst in the country,” said the MP.
He also said seeing some girls being paraded in one of the magazines in South Africa was not a good thing. He said it was not acceptable that a tourist could boast that he slept with Swazi women.
The MP said this would hurt the image of the country if there were no serious steps taken concerning the matter. MPs were also concerned about the fact that money was stolen from the King’s guest at the Royal Villas.
Lomahasha MP, Meninjeni Mahlalela said the ministry of tourism had been quiet about this issue yet it could have a negative impact on tourism. He wondered if people were safe in hotels around the country if money was going to be taken so easily.
“Are people going to come to the country if they suspect that their possessions would be stolen? This puts the image of the country in the spotlight,” said Kubuta MP Charles Myeza.
Nhlambeni MP, Frans Dlamini said tourism should be made a priority because it could generate income for the country.” The King said tourism is important, why then is it not made a priority?” said the MP.
The Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Macford Sibandze is expected to table written answers before the committee. He was represented by the Minister of Health Benedict Xaba.
Orion Hotel owes over E850 000 rent
PEOPLE are turned back at Pigg’s Peak Orion Hotel because of the poor structures.
Lomahasha MP, Meninjeni Mahlalela said the infrastructure at the hotel was collapsing. “What is the ministry doing about this, because government is losing money in the process?” he said. During the debate of the ministry of tourism’s first quarter report, Somntongo MP Doward Sihlongonyane wanted the minister to explain if it was true that Orion Hotel was closing down because it could not pay rent. The hotel owes E857,435.52 in rentals since March this year.
Mahlangatsha MP Musa Ngcobo wondered why the hotel was last audited in 2004. The first quarter report of the ministry of tourism states that “the company does not have policies, for example, human resource management, policy and accounting.
The hotel and casino needs major rehabilitation and funds are limited, the company was last audited in 2004 by KPMG. MP Masende Zwane said it was worrying that a number of hotels were closing down in the country. “Let us protect the hotels; we have seen Nhlangano Sun being sold and now Pigg’s Peak Orion Hotel,” he said.
