'Sushi King' shines at awards

While it is ironic that good-girl-gone-bad Nonhle Thema should be feted for her rantings on Twitter, it still wasn't a surprise when she was announced as Drama Queen of the Year at the third annual Feather Awards last night.

The former Channel O and Vuzu presenter, and daughter of veteran television actress Cynthia Shange, went off the rails earlier this year, even prompting SABC1's Minnie Dlamini to sue her for defamation of character.

Thema had called Dlamini a "young hoe and drunk".

The Feather Awards - similar to the US's Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Awards - and themed Glam.R.Us this year, were held at Melrose Arch, in northern Johannesburg.

But Thema was upstaged by the flashy Kenny "Sushi King" Kunene, who walked away with the Fag Hag award, and also took home another gong for Best Couple with his BFF Gayton McKenzie.

The pair struck up a bromance immediately after Kunene's release from jail in 2003, for running a ponzi scheme, and have been virtually inseparable since.

The biggest award of the night, the Feather Award, went to Aids activist Lucky Mazibuko, who succeeded corporate trend analyst Dion Chang to the award which recognises the person who provides the most inspiration and support to the gay community.

Feather Awards founder Thami Kotlolo said yesterday: "The Feather Awards represent a special night where sexual minorities - the gay and lesbian community - just come out and have a blast, and say 'hats off' to those in the public eye who keep us entertained, inspired and amused."

Other winners were: Bonang Matheba for best styled woman, Siphiwe Mpye for best styled man, Lulo Cafe for hunk of the year, socialite Edith Venter for "Diva Extraordinaire of the Year", Andile Jali for sports personality of the year, Natalie du Toit for role model of the year, Claire Mawisa for "Hot Chick of the Year", Zakes Bantwini for best musician and Jen Su for socialite of the year
